Krishna Janmashtami for the year 2020 is celebrated/ observed on Monday, August 10. Janmashtami is a Hindu religious festival, celebrating the birthday of Lord Krishna. The date falls in the month of Bhadon on the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu calendar which is July, August, or September.
Krishna Janmashtami festival is celebrated as the incarnation day of Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is related to the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. The scenes of the life of Lord Shri Krishna under this festival are sponsored by mediums like drama, fasting, Bhagavata Purana Katha, Ras Leela / Krishna Leela till midnight, as midnight is considered to be the incarnation time of Lord Shri Krishna.
During this festival, Ras Lila is mainly organized in Mathura-Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Raas means beauty, emotion or sweet and leela drama or dance or more widely it is called the dance of divine love.
Krishna Janmashtami is also known by the prominent names Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Kanhaiya Ashtami, Kanhaiya Eight, Sri Krishna Jayanti and Shreeji Jayanti.
Janmashtami is a national holiday in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh begins with the Dhakeswari Temple, the national temple in Dhaka. And Sri Swaminarayan Temple, Karachi is also celebrated in Pakistan.
Nirjal Fast or Upavasa for Lord Krishna
People feel keeping nirjal or waterless fasts will help them get closer to God. Devotees also keep 'Phalahar Vrat' having milk and fruits during the fast. Devotees observe strict discipline while fasting. They refrain from having cereals and salt on the day of the festival . The Dahi Handi festival is celebrated mainly in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Dahi i.e. (curd) and Handi means clay vessels like matka / matki.
Atrocities committed by Raja Kansa of Mathura, in which the people protest against the excessive demand of all milk products. In childhood, Lord Krishna used to go door-to-door with his Gwala groups and distribute milk products like curd, butter etc. to his Gwala friends. The Dahi-Handi Festival started as a protest.
